Dogs Victoria (Victorian Canine Association) is the peak body representing owners and breeders of purebred dogs in Victoria and has a history dating back to 1877. More than 280 individual clubs representing a single breed, a group of breeds or all breeds are affiliated with Dogs Victoria.
The core purpose of Dogs Vitoria is to promote and protect purebred dogs.
Dogs Australia is a not-for-profit organisation advocating for the preservation of purebred dogs through ethical breeding.
It champions the highest standard of animal welfare through education and fostering dog-loving communities.
Internationally recognised and established in 1958 as the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC), the organisation promotes responsible dog ownership; maintains the ORCHID* heritable canine diseases database; funds research into canine diseases; and supports state and territory-based member bodies.
Breeding dogs is something that many people consider doing, but it is something that comes with quite a bit of responsibility, long hours, and considerable expense. You can expect moments of joy, life-long friendships, tears and heartache along the way – it certainly is not for the faint-hearted!
To do it well you need to have an excellent understanding of the physiology of the dog, comprehensive knowledge of genetics, breeding, and breeding strategies, as well the time and resources to put into nurturing a litter of puppies so that they can develop to their full potential.
You also need to have facilities that meet or exceed the minimum standards set out by the Victorian Government and an understanding of the laws that apply to dog breeders in this state. Dog breeding has become very highly regulated.
